"I finally took my head out of the sand and freed up my nostrils and filled them with good, clean air, and that good clean air was called Doing Something for Someone Else." -Norma Jean McKeldin, diagnosed age 39

View Article  Last chance to crew for the Avon Walk!
I got an email this afternoon from the Avon Walk saying that if you want to be a crew member for the walk in October up in New York City, your chance to become one is running short. They're going to be closing applications to crew soon. So, if you or someone you know would like to join the crew team, you can do so by going online to www.avonwalk.org or by calling the New York Avon Walk Office at 212-586-8720. You can also email crew.newyork@avonwalk.org for more information.

With my foot the way it is, I'm wondering if I should have signed up to crew rather then walk.

I haven't been doing much fundraising at all for the Avon Walk this coming October. And I know why....I'm not sure I'm going to be able to walk in it for a number of reasons. First and formost, my left foot. When I ws 16 years old I had surgery done on both feet for bunions. They broke the bone and reset each by placing a pin in it to keep it in place. My right foot had to be redone about 8 years later but times had changed and they did laser surgery then by using a laser to chip away at the bone. My left foot was fine.

Until recently. Last year this time, I looked down at my left foot and I saw this little lump right about where the pin is. I didn't think anything of it, walked in the Breast Cancer 3 Day last October and seemed fine. Well, if you look at that little lump today it's gotten bigger and it now hurts and I'm starting to wonder if that pin is now trying to make it's way out of my foot. I don't even know if that's possible or not, but if it is and that is what's happening, I'm going to need surgery on that foot.

Now to reason two of why I might not be able to walk in the Avon Walk: my MIL is coming from Ireland the 1st week of October and is staying for 3 weeks. We have not seen her in over two years. Enough said about that.

And reason #3, airfare is insane!!!!!

I'm not saying right now that I'm definitely not walking in it. I'm going to first go to an orthopedic foot doctor and see what he/she has to say and then go from there.

My Team "Black Sheep" for the Avon Walk had their 1st fundraiser this past weekend. I couldn't make it so I wasn't able to reap in the rewards but my teammate/friend Colleen said they did very well. Her and my other teammate Gigi both went and I believe were there (out front of Publix) for 6 hours.(?) And the both made $140 to put towards their goal. Not bad!!!! We're doing another one next month which I will be able to attend and I can't wait! I really need to get on the ball with fundraising!
View Article  Pink Ribbon Bandaids...
I was just at Walgreens getting my prescriptions filled and I had about 20 minutes to walk around the store while I was waiting for them to fill them all so I decided to get some stuff we'd need for our trip in a little over a week. I slowly worked my way through the store (and $25 later) I came across these cool bandaids with the pink ribbon on them and they were on sale. I remember the past two 3 Day Walks always seeing someone wearing a pink ribbon bandaid but I never knew where they got them from. Now I know and I'll be saving this box for the Avon Walk next October!
View Article  3 Day Itch?
My friend and walking partner from the 3 Day in 2006 recently asked me if I had the 3 Day itch yet. My answer is no I don't. I've walked it now 2 years in a row and this year I just don't have it in me. 2006 was just awesome - it rocked! My friend and I had SO much fun together, it was awesome. 2007 was OK. Basically, it sucked. Not the people that I walked with - Colleen, Kim and Tara were awesome. It was the heat! I am horrible in the heat. I could train and train for days and days and be physically fit, but if there's heat and humidity, I'm done! And that's what happened in 2007. Friday and Sunday were hard because of the heat. Saturday was okay because the weather was nice. But the other two days - forget it. So no, the 3 Day itch has not appeared nor will it this year. I look forward to walking for 2 days up in my old stomping ground of NY City!
View Article  Training for the 2 day...
I got an email the other day from the 2 Day saying it's never too early to start training and they're right! I need to either start walking outside (since the weather has been perfect walking weather lately - not too stifling hot) or take the clothes that are hanging off the treadmill and use that in the mornings. I need to come up with some sort of schedule. The email suggests walking at a pace of 3.5 miles per hour. That's so you can complete the full 26.2 miles on Saturday. Then you've only got 12.8 miles left on Sunday.
View Article  Hug My Heels...
I was grocery shopping this morning, and as I always do when I have the time, I browsed through their foot care products. And something caught my eye because it had the pink ribbon it. They're called "Hug My Heels" and are made by Airplus. What they are, are silky smooth heel liners and they come in a pair. So I bought a pair and I'll try them out once I start training again. When I came home I decided to check out their website to see what else they might have and I found out that they support breast cancer research with a donation to the Avon Walk every time someone buys one of their products. I think that's awesome!

I'm going to go through their products and see what else I can find. I remember this past walk in October my heels were killing me. I think one of my teammates were too. Also, the balls of my feet hurt too and I see they have something for that as well. I'll definitely be trying alot of their stuff out!
View Article  Travel Hero...
When we go up to New York City for the Avon Walk we're going to have to make a hotel reservation to stay in a hotel the night before so we're right there. I'm sure as it gets closer to the actual walk we'll know the location of opening ceremonies and will be able to find a hotel near there. A friend of mine was telling me that when the time comes to use TravelHero.com. They provide discount hotel reservations and can help you find a great place to stay in hundreds of different cities in the U.S., Mexico, Canada and about 216 other countries. Not only can you find a hotel but you can also find flights, car rentals, activities and even vacation packages using the same website. If you're not comfortable booking any of your vacation needs online they also have an 800 number to call.

If I can persuade my husband to make the Avon Walk into a week trip we might need to look into renting a car. I'm not sure if we'd be flying or driving, but there's enough time right now to figure that all out. And yes, I have yet to even tell him I'm signed up.
View Article  AVON WALK GREAT START PARTY!
I wish I could be there for it, but, since it's up in New York and I'm down here in Florida it looks like I can't. I'm wondering though if there's a way to meet others from this area that will also be walking in it. I'll have to roam around their site a little bit more when I have some free time. Here's some more info though on the party:
