"I finally took my head out of the sand and freed up my nostrils and filled them with good, clean air, and that good clean air was called Doing Something for Someone Else." -Norma Jean McKeldin, diagnosed age 39

View Article  Help Spread Awareness

I got this off of my friend/fellow bloggers blog Alexis. They have unfortunately been personally touched by this disease. Alexis, you and your family are all in my thoughts and prayers!

Most people know that February is American Heart Month. But did you know that within February is also CHD Awareness Week?

To read Alexis' own personal story, please visit her blog.

Each year, an estimated 1 in 100 babies are born in the United States with a congenital heart defect; CHDs are the most common birth defect and the number one cause of death from birth defects during infancy. Nearly twice as many children die from congenital heart defects as from all childhood cancers combined, yet research for cancer receives five times the funding. This is due in large part to the lack of awareness most people have about congenital heart defects.

So what can you do to help?

  • If you blog, please make an entry helping to raise awareness. You can even link to her entry.
  • Place a button on your blog for the month.
  • If you are looking to give to a charity, think about donating to one that supports CHD research, such as the Children's Heart Foundation.
  • If you give to the American Heart Association, put "Zachary Brooks Foundation" in the memo designating that your funds will go to a foundation set up specifically for CHD heart awareness.
  • Wear read on February 14 to remember those who are affected by CHDs.
  • And if you have children, hug them a little tighter and thank God for the miracle and wonderful gift you have been given.
View Article  Alzheimer's Memory Walk...
Have you heard about this yet? The Alzheimer's Memory Walk is the nation's largest event to raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer's care, support and research. There are walks going on all over the country. There's one here in Orlando actually in the beginning of October and because this is a cause that is so near and dear to my heart I've seriously thought about walking in it. But I'm not sure that I can right now because of the weekend it's on. I did see that there is going to be one here in Tampa October of 2008 so if I don't do it this year, I definitely will next. Someone I know is walking in it this year and is actually a team captain. If you're interested in joining her team or donating you can find all the info you need at her donation page.
View Article  255 hops...
is how many Kieran did today for the Hop-A-Thon at his preschool! He came in 2nd in his class for most hops!!!! YAY Kieran! Way to go kiddo!!!!!!! He was so sweaty when I picked him up from school. All the kids looked so tired. I thought he might nap today when we got home but no. I bet he goes right to sleep tonight though. I give him 5 minutes from when I leave his bedroom tonight to tuck him in and he'll be asleep. I better give him some kids Motrin too. I bet he gets lag cramps tonight so instead of him waking us all up at 1am, I'll give it to him before bed!!!!
View Article  Hop-a-thon....
My youngest, Kieran will be participating in a Hop-a-thon at his preschool on April 19th. They will be hopping for the MDA (Muscular Dystrophy Association). The hop will provide a week of lessons, entertainment, coloring and exercise. Every child will benefit by using his or her strong muscles for those who can't. I am asking everyone to help support Kieran by making a donation or pledge for each hop, or simply a flat donation to MDA. All donations are tax-deductible. If you're interested in making a donation please let me know. By Kieran hopping along and by my dedication to finding a cure for breast cancer I am happy to help my child learn at a young age one of life's most important and valuable lessons - helping others!

She will be jumping rope on February 13th and 14th and needs all donations in by February 6th!Here's some info: The American Heart Association's on line fund raising website has a minimum donation amount of $25.00.
View Article  Go see some holiday lights!
One of Tristan's team mates, Junior and his family (The Rivera's) from his soccer team have a fantastic show of Christmas lights at their house every year. He's been featured in the Tampa Tribune for the past 3 years, had a radio station out to his house last night, and In The Loop was out there 2 days ago taking pictures. He says it takes him about a month to put it all up but it's so worth it.

This year they are asking anyone that drives by to please donate to The Joshua House. The Joshua House is an emergency shelter in in North Tampa for abused, neglected, and abandoned children. Needed items are: unwrapped toys, new clothing, games, personal items, hair and skin care products, canned foods and other non-perishable items. (These items can be dropped off at any reasonable hour-there are carts outside for your convenience).

$$$$ Donations are desperately needed for the children as well. Please make checks payable to: The Joshua House. John (the father) told me last night so far they have over $2000.00 in donations and that's just by word of mouth because the Tampa Tribune hasn't come out with their holiday light list yet.

"This years collections will be in loving memory of Mrs. Mary Licenziato One of the most caring, giving and thoughtful people one could ever meet! Gods blessings to all and thank you for your support. The Rivera Family: Grace, John, Gabriella and Junior"

Come see the extraordinary Christmas display at their house:
Willow Bend Subdivision. 22802 Cypress Trail Dr. in Lutz. Just off of Collier Parkway.
