Ten years ago this morning, at 4:15am, both Sean and I were asleep in bed. I woke up, looked at the clock and said to myself "something feels weird". I then sat up and my water broke. It was a Friday. My little guy (who we didn't know was a boy but I just had a feeling he was) decided he was coming two weeks early! After having been in labor since about 10:30am that morning, he was born at 8:55 that night, 6 pounds 1 ounce. My friend Kristin (and also his Godmother) nicknamed him "Peanut" because he was so tiny. She had even bought him a Beanie Baby (which was an elephant) but was called Peanut. To this day he still has it.
His first two years of life were hard. He had a condition with his neck called Torticollis (called Rye Neck back in my baby days) where the muscle on one side of his neck wasn't developing right. Because of it he had to have two different shaping helmets made (which he had to wear all of the time) because he'd always sleep on one side of his head and that side became flat. He and I had to go to physical therapy once a week. We were also at the neurologists alot. I remember back then being scared this was going to effect him the rest of his life. They had told us it might effect him when he first learns to ride a bike, learns to drive a car, etc. To look at him now though you wouldn't have a clue!
I'm having a hard time with this birthday. Maybe because it's such a milestone? I woke up this morning, looked at the clock and it was 4:15 and I just started crying. My parents are getting here this afternoon and then tonight we're having cake and opening gifts. My brother and Syndi are coming after school too.
I'm so proud of him. He's such a great kid and is so well rounded. We had his conference yesterday and she wants him in the gifted class so we're starting the long process of getting him tested. She said he's one of the best kids in her class - all his classmates like him, he helps her out and classmates as well if they need it, and is quiet and does his work.
I have to volunteer at school this morning but I'm going to see if I can leave about 10 minutes early so I can have lunch with him.
Happy 10th Birthday Tristan! I love you sweetheart!
